Lesson 3 of 6 · Absolute beginner
How to read a step sheet
Step sheets look like code until someone reads one out loud with you. Here's one, translated line by line.
6 minute read
The header
'32 count, 4 wall, beginner. Choreographer: Dana Ruiz. Music: Creek Bank Sunday.' That tells you length, how much you'll turn, difficulty, who wrote it, and what to search for.
The sections
Each block is 8 counts. Instructors teach one block at a time and stack them. If you can hold 8 counts, you can hold 32 — that's all a dance is.
The footnotes
Restarts and tags live at the bottom. On your first night, ignore them entirely. Dance the main 32 counts and let the room carry you through the rest.
