Lesson 2 of 6 · Absolute beginner
Your first five steps
Grapevine, step-touch, jazz box, coaster step, pivot turn. Learn these five and you can dance dozens of beginner dances.
7 minute read
Grapevine
Step right to the side, cross your left behind, step right to the side again, touch your left beside. Four counts. Mirror it to the left. This step appears in almost every beginner dance ever written.
Step-touch
Step to one side, touch the other foot beside it. Two counts. It's the step you use when you've lost the dance and want to keep moving.
Jazz box
Cross right over left, step left back, step right to the side, step left beside. You end up roughly where you started, having drawn a small box.
Coaster step
Step back with your right, bring your left beside it, step forward with your right. Three counts in two beats — say 'back-to-forward' out loud and it lands.
Pivot turn
Step forward on your right, then spin a half turn on the balls of both feet so you're facing the back. Two counts. Look where you're going, not at your feet.
