Lesson 1 of 6 · Absolute beginner
What line dancing actually is
Line dancing is a choreographed group dance. No partner needed. It’s that simple.
4 minute read
The format
A line dance is a short sequence of steps — usually 32 counts — that repeats. Everyone in the room dances it at the same time, facing the same direction. You never need a partner, and nobody is leading you.
Four words you'll hear tonight
That's genuinely the whole vocabulary you need for your first class.
- Count — one beat, one step. '32 count' means the sequence is 32 beats long.
- Wall — the direction you're facing. A '4 wall' dance turns you a quarter each time through.
- Restart — the dance starts over early, once, in a specific spot.
- Tag — a few extra counts added in at a specific spot.
What happens if you get lost
You stop, watch the person in front of you for four counts, and step back in. That is the accepted, normal, everybody-does-it solution. Nobody cares if you miss a step.
